The weight of the job

Why this work can be hard to carry

Repeated exposure to crisis, loss and danger, long shifts and a culture of staying strong can wear on anyone. Many first responders put off asking for help.

  • Stress that builds

Critical incidents, overnight shifts and constant readiness can take a toll on sleep, mood and health.

  • Worry about being seen

Concern about stigma, your reputation or your career can keep people silent.

  • Coping that stops working

Drinking or using to unwind or to switch off can slowly become a pattern that is hard to break.

Questions

Common questions from first responders

If you do not see your question here, our admissions team is glad to help.

How does treatment address the stress of the job?

Every client receives an individualized plan, and the team can include work-related stress and trauma in it. Our clinical team works with clinicians who specialize in trauma, using approaches such as EMDR, Seeking Safety and breathwork.

Will my employer be told?

No. We do not share information about your treatment without your written authorization, except where the law allows or requires it. We cannot speak to your employer's own policies, so you may want to ask your department or human resources about leave.

Can I use my insurance?

Many people do. Our admissions team will check your benefits for free and explain what your plan may cover before you decide anything. We work with most commercial insurance plans on an out-of-network basis, and all-inclusive private-pay pricing is also available.

I am not sure I need residential care. Can I still call?

Yes. A call is confidential and carries no obligation. We will talk through your situation and help you understand your options, including whether another level of care fits better.

Do you treat trauma and mental health along with substance use?

Yes. We provide integrated dual diagnosis care for conditions such as depression, trauma and family and relationship conflict that occur alongside substance use.

What if I am in crisis right now?

Call or text 988 (Suicide and Crisis Lifeline) or call 911. You do not have to wait for an appointment to get help.
