Getting started

Calling and admissions

Who is Harlow Gardens for?

Adults 18 and older who are struggling with alcohol or drug use, including people with co-occurring mental health conditions such as depression or trauma.

Do I have to commit to treatment if I call?

No. Calling is simply a conversation. We can answer questions, check insurance and explain options with no obligation.

I am calling about someone else. Can you help?

Yes. Family members and friends are welcome to call. We can answer your questions, explain the options and talk through how to approach your loved one.

Do I need to stop using before I arrive?

No. Stopping alcohol or certain medications suddenly can be unsafe without support. Tell our admissions team what you have been using and when you last used, so we can plan whether detox should come first.

Do you offer detox?

Yes. Our medically monitored withdrawal management takes place on the same campus as residential care, with continuous staff presence, emotional support and wellness monitoring. Nursing staff are available 24/7, and medication management is available when clinically appropriate. Learn about detox.

Does insurance cover treatment?

We work with most commercial insurance plans on an out-of-network basis, including most PPO plans with out-of-network benefits. Coverage depends on your policy, so we check your benefits for free and explain what to expect before you are admitted. All-inclusive private-pay pricing is also available. We do not accept HMO plans, Medi-Cal or Medicare.

How long does residential treatment last?

Length of stay depends on your clinical needs and progress, and it is part of the plan you build with your team. The average stay is 30 to 60 days, and extended care recommendations are available. Our admissions team can explain what to expect in your situation.

Is Harlow Gardens a residential or an outpatient program?

Harlow Gardens is a residential treatment facility, including medically monitored withdrawal management. We do not provide outpatient care at this location.

Where is Harlow Gardens?

Our gated campus is at 855 N Indian Canyon Dr, in downtown Palm Springs, California. Tour the facility.

What if this is an emergency?

If you or someone else is in immediate danger, call 911. For a mental health or substance use crisis, call or text 988 to reach the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline.

Treatment

Therapy and daily care

What kinds of therapy do you offer?

Residents take part in individual, group and family therapy, along with family education. Our clinical team uses CBT, DBT skills, trauma-informed care, EMDR, Seeking Safety, relapse prevention and psychoeducation, along with experiential psychodrama groups. Holistic practices include mindfulness and meditation, breathwork, recovery yoga, sound healing and nutritional therapy, alongside 12-step integration and Wellbriety.

Who provides therapy?

Each resident is assigned a personal counselor and a therapist who work with them throughout their stay. Our team includes therapists, certified counselors, a psychologist, a family therapy specialist, and nursing staff and behavioral health technicians available 24/7, led by our Medical Director and Clinical Director. Psychiatric evaluation and medication management are provided by a contracted psychiatrist via telehealth. Meet our team.

Do I have to follow the 12-step model?

12-step principles are part of our programming, and residents are introduced to meetings and the steps. Your team can talk with you about how the 12-step model fits with your own beliefs and goals.

Do you treat mental health conditions?

Yes. We provide integrated dual diagnosis care for depression, trauma, family and relationship conflict and other concerns that occur alongside substance use.

Do I need detox before residential treatment?

Not always. Our team reviews your recent substance use during admissions and recommends whether withdrawal support should come first. Learn about detox.

Is there drug and alcohol testing during treatment?

Yes. Drug and alcohol testing is part of treatment at Harlow Gardens and helps keep the campus a safe, substance-free place to recover.

Families

Families and visiting

Will you tell me how my loved one is doing in treatment?

Treatment information is protected by HIPAA and federal confidentiality rules for substance use treatment records. We can share updates only when your loved one gives written consent. Read our Notice of Privacy Practices.

Can family members visit?

Family involvement is highly encouraged when it is appropriate. A family therapy specialist offers one-on-one and group sessions for families. Visiting is scheduled in coordination with each client's treatment team.

What if my loved one refuses help?

That is common, and it does not mean they will never accept help. Keep communication open, set clear boundaries and consider talking with our team or a professional about next steps, including whether a planned intervention makes sense.

Is it safe for my loved one to stop drinking or using on their own?

Stopping alcohol, benzodiazepines or certain other substances suddenly can be dangerous. Talk with our admissions team or a medical provider before your loved one stops. If someone is in immediate danger, call 911.

Credentials

Licensing and accreditation

Is Harlow Gardens licensed by the State of California?

Yes. Harlow Gardens is licensed and certified by the California Department of Health Care Services, certification number 330244AP, which expires 11/30/2027.

What is CARF accreditation?

CARF, the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities, is an independent, nonprofit organization that accredits health and human services providers after an on-site review against its standards. Harlow Gardens is accredited by CARF, and you can confirm our accreditation using the provider search on carf.org.

What is LegitScript certification?

LegitScript reviews addiction treatment providers for legal and regulatory compliance and transparency. Certification is required by major advertising platforms, including Google, before treatment providers can advertise.

Why do you describe detox as medically monitored withdrawal management?

Harlow Gardens is licensed by DHCS as a residential treatment facility with an Incidental Medical Services (IMS) designation, which allows us to provide withdrawal management on site. Medically monitored withdrawal management is how we describe this residential level of detox care, which is different from hospital-based detox. Nursing staff are available 24/7.

After treatment

Aftercare

When does aftercare planning start?

At admission. Your clinical team begins planning for continuing care as part of treatment, so you have time to practice the plan before you leave.

Do I need to go to outpatient treatment after residential care?

It depends on your needs. Some people benefit from a step-down level of care, while others are ready for outpatient therapy and a strong recovery community. Your team will recommend what fits your situation.

What if I relapse after leaving?

Reach out for help right away. A lapse does not erase your progress, and getting support quickly matters. Alumni can return for individual sessions or aftercare groups, which are offered for a fee. In an emergency, call 911, or call or text 988 for crisis support.

What if I live outside the Coachella Valley?

Your plan is built around where you will live. Your team helps identify therapists, outpatient programs, meetings and support groups close to home.

Professionals

For referring professionals

How do I share client information with you?

Please call admissions rather than sending details through this website. With the client's written consent, our team will arrange a secure way to exchange the information needed for a clinical review. See our Notice of Privacy Practices.

Will I receive updates on my client's progress?

Only with the client's written consent. Federal confidentiality rules for substance use treatment records limit what we can share without it.
