Questions? Call for Help Now
For families and loved ones
Knowing how to help someone with addiction is hard when you are worried and unsure where to start. Our admissions team talks with families every day, and we can help you understand the options and plan a next step.
(760) 606-3016Families welcome to call anytimeConfidential. You do not need your loved one on the line to call.

Signs to look for
Every situation is different, and no single sign means someone needs treatment. Patterns like these are a reason to start a conversation.
New irritability, anxiety, withdrawal from family and friends, or sudden changes in sleep and appetite.
Hidden bottles or pills, unexplained absences, or defensiveness when substance use comes up.
Missed work or school, neglected bills, or commitments to family that are no longer kept.
Promises to stop or slow down that do not last, or needing more to feel the same effect.
Shakiness, sweating or sickness when not using, weight changes, or frequent illness.
Driving after drinking or using, mixing substances, or legal and financial problems.
Starting the conversation
There is no perfect script, but a calm, caring conversation is more likely to be heard than a confrontation.
Talk when your loved one is sober and there is time to listen, not in the middle of a crisis or an argument.
Use "I" statements and describe specific things you have seen, so the focus stays on concern rather than blame.
Know what help looks like before you talk. Our admissions team can check insurance and explain options in advance.
Many people are not ready the first time. Stay connected, set healthy boundaries and try again.
Considering a planned intervention? Read our guide or call admissions to talk it through.
Families at Harlow Gardens
Addiction affects the whole family, and so does recovery. When it is appropriate and your loved one agrees, families can be part of the process.

Care for yourself, too
Supporting someone through addiction is exhausting. Getting support for yourself helps you stay steady, whatever your loved one decides.
Groups such as Al-Anon and Nar-Anon connect you with others who understand what you are going through.
Boundaries protect you and avoid shielding your loved one from the consequences of substance use.
A therapist can help you process stress, grief and difficult decisions at your own pace.

If you do not see your question here, our admissions team is glad to help.
Yes. Family members and friends are welcome to call. We can answer your questions, explain treatment options, check insurance benefits and talk through how to approach your loved one.
Treatment information is protected by HIPAA and federal confidentiality rules for substance use treatment records. We can share updates only when your loved one gives written consent. Read our Notice of Privacy Practices.
That is common, and it does not mean they will never accept help. Keep communication open, set clear boundaries and consider talking with our team or a professional about next steps, including whether a planned intervention makes sense.
Stopping alcohol, benzodiazepines or certain other substances suddenly can be dangerous. Talk with our admissions team or a medical provider before your loved one stops. If someone is in immediate danger, call 911.
Family involvement is highly encouraged when it is appropriate. A family therapy specialist offers one-on-one and group sessions for families. Visiting is scheduled in coordination with each client's treatment team.
You do not have to wait
