How IHS coverage works

Using Indian Health Service or tribal benefits for treatment

IHS and tribal programs can pay for care at an outside facility through Purchased/Referred Care (PRC). Your program decides eligibility and approval. Harlow Gardens then works with them on a single case agreement for your stay.

  1. Call our admissions team

Tell us which IHS, tribal or urban Indian health program you use. The call is confidential.

  2. Connect with your health program

Your program reviews your eligibility and the need for residential care. A referral or approval is usually needed before admission.

  3. We coordinate the agreement

With your permission, we share the clinical information your program needs and work out a single case agreement.

  4. Plan your arrival

Once care is approved, we help you plan your arrival in Palm Springs and what to bring.

Good to know

Before you start the referral

  • Approval usually comes firstPRC generally requires authorization from your program before non-emergency care begins.
  • Other coverage may be checkedIHS is generally the payer of last resort, so your program may ask about other insurance you have.
  • Where you live can matterPRC eligibility often depends on living in your program's service area.
  • Other ways to payWe also work with most commercial plans out of network and offer all-inclusive private pay.

Questions

Common questions about IHS and tribal coverage

If you do not see your question here, our admissions team is glad to help.

Does Harlow Gardens accept Indian Health Service?

We work with Indian Health Service, tribal and urban Indian health programs through single case agreements. Coverage depends on your eligibility and your program's approval, and our admissions team can help coordinate the process.

What is a single case agreement?

It is an agreement between Harlow Gardens and your health program that sets the terms for one person's treatment. It allows your program to pay for care at a facility outside its own network.

What is Purchased/Referred Care?

Purchased/Referred Care (PRC) is how IHS and tribal programs pay for care that they cannot provide directly. Eligibility usually depends on your enrollment or descent, where you live and your program's approval before care begins.

I live outside California. Can I still come to Harlow Gardens?

Yes, adults from any state are welcome. Whether your program will approve care outside its area is up to that program, so we recommend asking them early. We can help with that conversation.

Do you offer culturally based recovery support?

Yes. Wellbriety is part of our program, alongside 12-step integration, holistic practices and family involvement. Please tell us about any traditions or practices that matter to you, and we will talk about how we can support them during your stay.

What if my program does not approve treatment?

We will talk through other options with you, which may include commercial insurance, private pay or a referral to another provider that fits your needs.

What if I am in crisis right now?

Call or text 988 (Suicide and Crisis Lifeline) or call 911. You do not have to wait for an appointment to get help.
